The session draws from the principles of Motivational Interviewing as described by Rollnick and Miller. Originally developed for supporting people with problematic drug and alcohol use it has since been recognised for its applicability in a whole range of behavioural contexts. This journey very much aligns with our own. Our model has evolved over the last decade with practical application supplementing the original theory and principles. We developed SCIP© a conversational framework specifically designed to give beginners something on which to hang a motivational conversation that enables change. We introduce practical tools and strategies drawn from other sources such as the trans-theoretical (stages of change) model, solution focused and cognitive behavioural models.
The one day training will cover:
- Understanding an effective behaviour change conversation
- We explore the ABC of change and the underpinning concepts of ambivalence and the righting reflex.
- We introduce our own SCIP© technique: a conversational framework specifically designed to give beginners something on which to hang a motivational conversation that enables change.
- We explore two common challenges “we already do this” and “we don’t have time to do this” with the group using skills rehearsals focused on changes that are important and real to them. Trainees experience the typical “yes but no but” conversation and contrast it to a motivational conversation that uses the same amount of time differently.
- The session focuses on the practical skills as commonly described in the acronym OARS (Open Questions, Affirmation, Reflective Listening and Summarizing) making reference to the spirit and stages of Motivational Interviewing.
- We introduce a range of practical tools that participants can use in motivational behaviour change conversations.
In the session we balance a knowledge transfer with opportunities to experience and practice new techniques. We adopt a flexible, small group approach to training that is suited to a range of settings. The flexibility of the SCIP technique means not only is it the perfect place to start motivational conversations it is also ideally suited to having motivational conversations in time limited environments, for peer to peer conversations and delivering brief interventions as described in programs such as Make Every Contact Count and Alcohol Screening and Brief Advice.
Up to three different tools can be introduced to meet local requirements as identified during the pre-training phase. This way attendees leave the session with the knowledge and skills needed and a toolbox equipped to have truly person centered motivational conversations.
